One of the main causes of not reaching the summit is altitude sickness, and although this affects almost everyone, most people overcome it to reach the top. There are a number of hiking routes on Kilimanjaro and the accommodation ranges from huts to tents on the various routes. Day 1: Moshi, TanzaniaThe first night of the Kilimanjaro adventure is spent in a hotel in Moshi from where you will be picked up the next day. Day 2: Machame, Kilimanjaro National Park, TanzaniaIt is an early pick up from your hotel in Moshi for the transfer to the park gate from where the hiking will start. The route takes you through forest to the Camp Macheme situated at 3000m where you will spend the first night on the legendary mountain. The hike today will take approximately 6 hours. Day 3: Shira Hut, Kilimanjaro National Park, TanzaniaThe route today finds you hiking through valleys and along rocky ridges, through heather groves and a river gorge before reaching Shira Hut. The route takes approximately 5 hours before reaching Shira Hut located at 3850m. Day 4: Baranco Camp, Kilimanjaro National Park, TanzaniaToday’s route heads eastwards up to 4600m where a chance to acclimatise presents itself. The route then turns south to the glacier streams where Baranco Hut is located at 3900m. The hike today is approximately 6 hours. Day 5: Barafu Hut, Kilimanjaro National Park, TanzaniaToday an approximately 6 hour hike will take you up to Barafu hut at 4600m where you will spend a few hours sleeping before attempting the ascent of the peak in the early hours of the next morning. Day 6: The summit of Kilimanjaro and Mweka Camp, TanzaniaWaking up around midnight you will head out on the hike to the summit of Africa’s highest mountain where the Uhuru Peak awaits. The summit will take approximately 6 hours. On route you will experience one of the most rewarding sunrises you will ever see.
On reaching the summit you will have time to appreciate your achievements before the descent. The descent goes a lot quicker than the ascent and from the summit you will head to Mweka Camp via Barafu where you will relax and get your first real good nights’ rest.
